The Land and Building Advisory Committee (LBAC) discusses Study on Provision of Elderly Housing

The Land and Building Advisory Committee (LBAC) was consulted on the findings of the "Study on Provision of Elderly Housing" at the meeting today (15 September).

Members were briefed on the concept of developing comprehensively planned and designed elderly housing and the need to involve the private sector in its provision. They also noted the progress of the two Senior Citizen Residences Schemes implemented by the Housing Society. Some members suggested that universal design which makes housing user-friendly to the elders, amongst the population in general, should be explored, highlighting the need to be mindful of the preference by elders and their family members to live close to each other.

It is Government's policy to improve the quality of life of the elders, ensuring that they will continue to enjoy a sense of security, a sense of belonging and a feeling of health and worthiness. The Study undertaken by the Planning Department has identified the major issues to be addressed with a view to recommending possible ways to improve the future provision of elderly housing in line with the objectives of "healthy ageing" and "ageing in place".
