SETW visits Wan Chai District

The Secretary for the Environment, Transport and Works, Dr Sarah Liao, visited Wan Chai District today (September 15) to get an update on the latest development of the district.

Accompanied by the District Officer (Wan Chai), Mr William Yuen,  Dr Liao made her first stop at the waterfront area in the ex-cargo working site along Hung Hing Road, where she was briefed on the quick-win project.

Under this project, the ex-public cargo working area between the Wan Chai Ferry Pier and the Hong Kong Royal Yacht Club will be turned into a pedestrian link and amenity areas for public enjoyment.

Dr Liao was pleased to see that this temporary promenade, expected to be completed in a few months' time, will enable people to get close to the sea front and enjoy the beauty of the Victoria Harbour.

Dr Liao then went to the site at the junction of Leighton Road and Caroline Hill Road, which is currently occupied by the Post Office Staff Recreation Club, the PCCW Sports Club and buildings previously used by Electrical and Mechanical Services Department, Civil Aid Service, Highways Department and Drainage Services Department. There she was briefed on the details of its redevelopment plans that included the construction of a public transport terminus.

Dr Liao noted with interest the details of the plan and in particular the preservation of a stone wall and a number of mature trees along Leighton Road.

She then strolled along the shopping area in Pak Sha Road, Lee Garden Road and Kai Chiu Road. On the way she stopped to chat with shop operators to see how business was going and listen to their views on the pedestrianisation trial scheme in the area.

Moving to Kai Chiu Road and the Mass Transit Railway Causeway Bay Station, Dr Liao was briefed on the latest development of the proposed Hennessy Road Underground Pedestrian-and-Retail Link and the Mass Transit Railway (MTR) Causeway Bay Station Improvement Scheme.

Before she ended her visit, Dr Liao went to Lockhart Road to see proposed plan to beautify the Lockhart Road/East Point Road Pedestrian Precinct using a barrier-free design.

Today's visit is one of the regular Principal Official's district visits to get to know more about district affairs and development.
