Water Supplies Department sets up task force to investigate industrial accident

The Water Supplies Department has set up a task force, to be headed by a Chief Engineer, to investigate an industrial accident in which a WSD Workman I was seriously injured today (Monday).

The task force will also assist the Labour Department in its investigation to avoid recurrence of such accident.

The Director of Water Supplies, Mr Chan Chi-chiu, visited the injured staff at hospital this afternoon.  He is saddened by the incident and expressed his deepest consolation to the family of the worker.

The WSD received a report at 9.30 am today about a water seepage case at Shing Tai Street outside Block 48 and 49 of Heng Fa Chuen in Eastern District. WSD staff arrived at the scene at 10.25 am and found water seeping from a 400 mm-diameter valve chamber. When inspecting the valve, two WSD officers were hit by some loose parts of the valve that came out with sudden jets of water. Both were injured and sent to hospital for treatment. The workman I is still under treatment while the Work Supervisor II, has been discharged from the hospital.

Water supply to Block 46 to 50 of Heng Fa Chuen and some shops in the shopping arcade nearby has been suspended. The department is carrying out urgent repair works and has deployed one water wagon and four water tanks to provide temporary water supply to the residents and shop operators. It is expected that the water supplies will be resumed at about midnight.
