Skyrise Greenery Awards 2012 (with photos)
Skyrise greening is the trend of urban greening design in the present-day world, the Permanent Secretary for Development (Works), Mr Wai Chi-sing, said today (May 8). "In a highly compact city like Hong Kong, skyrise greening generates more amenity areas for the public and creates spatial relief," he said.
The presentation ceremony for the Skyrise Greenery Awards 2012, which is the first of its kind in Hong Kong, was held at the Hong Kong Science Museum in Tsim Sha Tsui today to recognise exemplary projects that showcase the integration of skyrise greenery into the city's built environment. The Awards aim to promote skyrise greening in the building industry as an integral part of project design for a quality landscape and built environment, foster public appreciation of exemplary projects, and promote its wider adoption in Hong Kong.
Twenty-five projects received awards. The Gold Award went to the Urban Renewal Authority and Sino Land Company Limited for the project Citywalk 1 & Citywalk 2.
In his opening speech, Mr Wai said that skyrise greening not only beautifies the environment and improves air quality, but also mitigates the heat island effect and brings about ecological benefits. He praised the award scheme for playing a pivotal role in the development of more sustainable and cost-effective architectural designs.
The Skyrise Greenery Awards 2012 was organised by the Greening, Landscape and Tree Management Section of the Development Bureau together with the Hong Kong Green Building Council, the Professional Green Building Council, the Hong Kong Institute of Architects, the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers, the Hong Kong Institute of Landscape Architects, the Hong Kong Institute of Planners and the Hong Kong Institute of Surveyors. Since its launch earlier this year, the Awards have been well received by the industry with a total of 113 entries from the Government, private developments, schools and non-government organisations, and planning/research categories.
The adjudication panel, formed by representatives from the Development Bureau, the co-organisers, academia and relevant experts, was very pleased with the overwhelming response from the industry. The panel was also impressed by the overall high quality of the entries, which demonstrated how the integration of buildings and landscaping can improve our cityscape as a whole.
The ceremony was followed by a seminar in which the award winners presented their projects and shared their ideas.
To facilitate the public to appreciate the award winning entries, the Skyrise Greenery Awards 2012 roving exhibition is being held from today to October 3. The first stop is the exhibition area, 1/F, Hong Kong Science Museum, where winning entries will be displayed for free until May 17.
