In response to media reports today (May 23) on the reason for re-appointing Mr Barry Cheung Chun-yuen as Chairman of the Urban Renewal Authority (URA) Board, the Development Bureau pointed out that, in re-appointing Mr Cheung as Chairman of the URA Board, the Government had taken into consideration the fact that many of the veteran non-executive directors of the previous term of the URA Board would be retiring after six years of service and that the Managing Director of the URA had just retired in late February. Mr Cheung's re-appointment would provide the necessary leadership and continuity at the URA Board to ensure the continued effective implementation of the Urban Renewal Strategy.
In view of Mr Cheung's extensive experience in urban renewal, the Government, after due consideration, saw the need for flexibility in the appointment of the URA Board Chairman.
Under the established mechanism, the appointments of non-executive directors of the URA Board (including the Chairman) are recommended by the Secretary for Development. The recommendations, with the support of the Financial Secretary, will be presented to the Chief Executive for approval.
