The Waterworks (Amendment) (No. 2) Regulation 2017 (Amendment No. 2 Regulation) was gazetted today (October 13) to refine the Waterworks Regulations (Cap. 102A).
The major refinements made in the Amendment No. 2 Regulation include:
(a) setting out water quality and water supply efficiency to be the main considerations for any relaxation of prescribed specification;
(b) deleting the provisions related to cast iron pipes;
(c) making clear the applicability of the British Standard 6920 series to all non-metallic products for use in contact with water intended for human consumption;
(d) repealing paragraph 1 of Part 2 of Schedule 2 of the Waterworks Regulations (Cap. 102A) to avoid ambiguity; and
(e) making clear that Part 4 of Schedule 2 of the Waterworks Regulations (Cap. 102A) does not cover the water heaters used for heating water intended for human consumption.
"Construction and installation of plumbing systems have to comply with the requirements prescribed in the Waterworks Ordinance (Cap. 102). With the Amendment No. 2 Regulation, the views collected during the vetting of the Waterworks (Amendment) Regulation 2017 from May to July this year could be incorporated in the latest applicable technical requirements and standards for plumbing materials," a spokesman for the Development Bureau said.
The Amendment No. 2 Regulation will be tabled at the Legislative Council on October 18 for negative vetting. The revised amendments will come into effect on December 8.
A brief on the Amendment No. 2 Regulation is available at the Development Bureau's website: www.devb.gov.hk/en/legco_matters/legislative_council_papers/index.html.
