Secretary for Development visits Central and Western District
The Secretary for Development, Mrs Carrie Lam, visited Central and Western District today (April 29) to learn about the latest developments there.
Accompanied by the District Officer of Central and Western District, Miss Eliza Yau, Mrs Lam went to Mount Davis to see the disused battery and other war relics.
The Mount Davis battery was constructed in 1912 to serve as a strategic point of coastal defence. It was equipped with five 9.2-inch cannons guarding the western entrance of Victoria Harbour. All the cannons and other ancillary facilities were destroyed during World War II.
Mrs Lam also met Chairman of the Friends of Mount Davis, Mr Ivan Tse, and was briefed on proposed preservation works for the military relics.
Mrs Lam then visited the Hong Kong Museum of Medical Sciences in Caine Lane, Sheung Wan, and was given a tour of the museum by Chairman of Board of Directors of the Hong Kong Museum of Medical Sciences Society Dr Laurence Hou. There are 11 exhibition galleries in the museum exploring the past and latest development of health and diseases, as well as the interface between Chinese and Western medicine.
The museum, opened in 1996, was converted from the former Pathological Institute constructed in 1905. The institute was the first bacteriological laboratory in Hong Kong and served a very important role in Hong Kong's medical history. The elegant red-brick building of the institute featuring Edwardian architectural design was declared a monument in 1990.
Before ending the visit, Mrs Lam met members of the Central and Western District Council to exchange views on the district's developments.
