Development Bureau holds Career Expo (with photos)
A Career Expo to introduce infrastructure-related employment opportunities provided by the Government and private organisations is being held from today (March 24) to Thursday (March 26).
Organised by the Development Bureau, the expo, titled "Infrastructure: Building Opportunities for a Better Tomorrow" is being held at the Central Library.
The Financial Secretary, Mr John C Tsang, officiated at the opening ceremony of the Career Expo this morning. He said that about 1,000 professional and technician vacancies would be provided at the expo for interested people to apply, and he hoped that people specialising in different sectors of the construction industry could obtain useful information at the expo and find suitable jobs.
"As an open and externally oriented economy, Hong Kong is facing a severe challenge brought about by the global economic downturn amid the financial tsunami. The job market will also face uncertainties in future," Mr Tsang said.
"The Government's principle is not to cut down expenditure amid the economic downturn and revenue reduction. On the contrary, we will create more job opportunities in all aspects to benefit people from various sectors by increasing internal demand and promoting infrastructure investment," Mr Tsang said.
"Among various measures to create jobs, the large-scale infrastructure projects are the most effective way to achieve the aim. The Government will promote the 10 major infrastructure projects and other medium-sized or small projects. The estimated capital works expenditure for 2009-10 will be as high as $39.3 billion, an increase of 71% over the $23 billion in 2008-09. About 47,000 jobs will be created while the Hong Kong Housing Authority will also create an extra 10,000 jobs."
On building maintenance and repair, the Development Bureau, the Hong Kong Housing Society and the Urban Renewal Authority will allocate $1 billion to jointly organise a two-year project "Operation Building Bright" which will create about 10,000 jobs in the coming two years.
"There will be a continuous increase in the number of such works in the years ahead. The annual capital works expenditure will further increase and may reach $50 billion. Apart from creating a large number of employment opportunities, Hong Kong competitiveness will also be raised, providing the public with a better quality and safe living environment," he said.
Mr Tsang said that with the launching of the 10 major infrastructure projects and others such as the implementation of the Greening Master Plans, building maintenance scheme and the Revitalising Historic Buildings Through Partnership Scheme, the Government and the construction industry would offer more new jobs.
He called on the public to co-operate in responding to the financial tsunami. He said he believed that Hong Kong people could create a better tomorrow with close co-operation among the Government, employers and staff.
The "Infrastructure: Building Opportunities for a Better Tomorrow" Career Expo will be held in the Exhibition Gallery at the Hong Kong Central Library at 66 Causeway Road, Causeway Bay, until Thursday to provide a comprehensive introduction to employment opportunities offered by the Lands, Planning and various works departments. A total of 10 Government departments and seven supporting organisations are participating in the exhibition. The Government departments are Architectural Services Department, Buildings Department, Civil Engineering and Development Department, Drainage Services Department, Electrical and Mechanical Services Department, Highways Department, Lands Department, Land Registry, Planning Department and Water Supplies Department. The seven supporting organisations are Association of Consulting Engineers of Hong Kong, Construction Industry Council, Hong Kong Construction Association, Hong Kong Housing Authority, Hong Kong Housing Society, MTR Corporation Limited and Urban Renewal Authority.
People are also welcome to participate in the 12 talks on jobs offered in works and infrastructure projects in the afternoon of tomorrow and Thursday (March 25 and 26) in Activity Room 1 of Hong Kong Central Library.
