Secretary for Development visits Wong Tai Sin District (with photos)
The Secretary for Development, Mrs Carrie Lam, visited Wong Tai Sin District today (May 28) and briefed a group of entrepreneurs on the new government initiatives to facilitate the redevelopment or wholesale conversion of industrial buildings in the district.
Mrs Lam met members of the Hong Kong Wong Tai Sin Industry and Commerce Association and exchanged views with them on how to make use of the new initiatives launched on April 1 this year to revitalise and add value to vacant and under-utilised industrial buildings so as to provide new momentum for economic growth and create jobs.
There are about 60 industrial buildings in the San Po Kong, Tsz Wan Shan and Diamond Hill areas. With their prime locations in urban areas, these buildings have great potential as they are all located in "Other Specified Uses" annotated "Business" zones, which will allow the conversion or redevelopment of the industrial buildings for commercial, office or non-polluting industrial uses.
During today's visit, Mrs Lam also toured the Choi Wan Rhenish Integrated Children and Youth Services Centre in Choi Wan Estate and saw some performances by children and youngsters. She also chatted in English with some secondary school students who are preparing for the coming English oral examination.
With a history of serving the Wong Tai Sin community for 30 years, the centre provides various kinds of family and social services including children and youth activities, family counselling service, career guidance service and outreach service.
Before concluding her visit, Mrs Lam joined Wong Tai Sin District Council members for a tea gathering and listened to their views on the latest developments in Wong Tai Sin District.
She appealed to members to support the package of proposals put forth by the Government for the electoral methods for selecting the Chief Executive and forming the Legislative Council in 2012.
She emphasised that the new package could enhance the democratic elements of the two electoral methods through the participation of elected District Council members who have a broad electoral base. Approval of the proposed package for the 2012 elections could roll forward democratic development for Hong Kong and pave the way for determining the universal suffrage models for 2017 and 2020.
