SDEV visits Tuen Mun
The Secretary for Development, Mrs Carrie Lam, visited several community and social services in Tuen Mun today (November 19) during her visit to the district.
Accompanied by District Officer (Tuen Mun), Mr Eddie Cheung, Mrs Lam visited Yan Oi Tong Tuen San Tsing Rural Community Service Centre, which provides community services to the residents of Tuen Tze Wai, San Hing Tsuen and Tsing Chuen Wai.
She was briefed on the Caring Rural Elderly Pilot Programme, jointly launched by Tuen Mun District Office, Tuen Mun Rural Committee and Yan Oi Tong in 2008 with funding provided by the District Office. The programme aims to provide community services to elderly people living in 36 villages in Tuen Mun. Social workers will visit these elderly residents to understand their needs and provide the necessary community support and assistance. A community database with information on about 600 elderly households will also be built up under the programme.
Mrs Lam also visited the Tuen Mun Children and Juvenile Home (TMCJH) operated by the Social Welfare Department (SWD) in San Shek Wan North Road. TMCJH commenced operation in early 2007 following the integration of six former SWD correctional/residential homes for children and juveniles. Apart from providing residential care for 388 male and female residents, the modernised complex also accommodates various recreational, educational, and vocational training facilities.
During today's visit to Tuen Mun, Mrs Lam also toured the Tsing Shan Monastery and inspected restoration work on the monastery, which began in September 2009 and is scheduled for completion in December 2012. There are currently five Grade 1 historic buildings, five Grade 2 buildings and one Grade 3 historic building in the monastery complex.
Before completing her visit, Mrs Lam exchanged views with members of the Tuen Mun District Council on issues of mutual concern.
