LDAC briefed on Budget initiatives

The Land and Development Advisory Committee (LDAC) was briefed on the 2011-12 Budget initiatives concerning Development Bureau and considered one land development proposal handled by the Development Opportunities Office at its meeting today (February 24).

The Secretary for Development, Mrs Carrie Lam, briefed members on key initiatives in the 2011-12 Budget related to land supply, including increasing the supply of housing land and commercial/business sites, and exploring new ways to increase the supply of land through reclamation outside Victoria Harbour and developing rock caverns in order to release more land for housing and other uses.

Members also noted that six property developments above MTR stations along the West Rail would be redesigned to increase the supply of small and medium-sized flats and to comply with new guidelines on controlling "inflated buildings". Mrs Lam also briefed members on the latest progress of Operation Building Bright and promulgation of the new Urban Renewal Strategy. LDAC members supported these initiatives. They considered that the new initiatives were forward-looking and responding actively to market needs.

The Committee also discussed and supported a land development project proposed by the Hong Kong Caritas to redevelop its social centre at Shing Mun Road, Tsuen Wan. The redeveloped social centre will generate additional floor space for integrated and quality services for needy individuals and families. New services to be provided at the social centre will include residential care and day care services for the elderly, a trauma treatment centre, and a District Support Centre for Persons with Disabilities to provide one-stop community support services for persons with disabilities, their family members and carers.
