The Secretary for Development, Mrs Carrie Lam, today (May 30) commenced site visits to designated heritage and urban development projects in Zhengzhou as part of the 2011 Mainland and Hong Kong Construction Industry Forum.
Leading a delegation of over 100 Hong Kong delegates, Mrs Lam visited Shaolin Temple at Songshan Mountain this morning to take a close look at the preservation of the site's historic buildings. The temple compound was listed on the World Heritage List by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation last year.
The delegation then visited Kang Baiwan Mansion in the afternoon. Located at Kangdian, Gongyi City, the mansion characterises the fortress-like architecture of the Loess Plateau area of northern China in the 17th and 18th centuries. Kang Baiwan Mansion was once a large, luxurious landlord's house demonstrating a mix of peasant, government official and merchant house styles. The State Council listed the mansion as one of the Cultural Relics Protection Units in 2001.
Mrs Lam and the delegation also visited Zhengzhou New District, a major new development in Henan Province which commenced construction in 2009. Covering an area of 1,840 square kilometres, Zhengzhou New District is planned as a pilot area for scientific development and as an integrated transport hub, a logistics centre and a district service centre.
Mrs Lam also met the Vice-mayor of Zhengzhou City, Mr Zhatu Shayiremu.
Yesterday (May 29) in Luoyang, the delegation conducted site visits to various major heritage conservation projects including Luoyang Museum, Dingdingmen Heritage Site Museum, Luoyang Ancient Street Area and Longmen Grottoes.
Mrs Lam will return to Hong Kong tomorrow (May 31).
