The Government today (November 18) announced that, under section 4 of the Urban Renewal Authority Ordinance, the Chief Executive has appointed or re-appointed 10 non-official non-executive directors to the Urban Renewal Authority (URA) Board with effect from December 1, 2011.
Dr Billy Mak Sui-choi has been newly appointed as a non-official non-executive director.
The nine re-appointed non-official non-executive directors comprise Mr James To Kun-sun, Mr Wong Kwok-kin and Miss Tanya Chan, whose appointments are for one year to tie in with their current terms as members of the Legislative Council, and Mr Walter Chan Kar-lok, Professor Desmond Hui Cheuk-kuen, Mr Philip Kan Siu-lun, Mr Daniel Lam Chun, Dr Isaac Ng Ka-chui and Dr John Wong Yee-him.
The Secretary for Development, Mrs Carrie Lam, welcomed the appointment and re-appointments.
"I am most delighted with the re-appointment of the incumbent Board members for the new term commencing December 1, 2011, and I extend a warm welcome to our new member. The URA Board, under the capable leadership of the Chairman, Mr Barry Cheung, has made important contributions to urban renewal in Hong Kong over the past few years," said Mrs Lam.
"For the new term, we will continue to have a Board comprising professionals and community leaders with a wide range of knowledge and experience relating to urban renewal as well as the work of URA. I have every confidence that the Authority will live up to the challenges presented before it and continue to make sterling contributions toward urban renewal work in Hong Kong," she said.
Following the promulgation of the new Urban Renewal Strategy in February this year, the URA has devised implementation details for all the new initiatives concerning the Authority under the new Strategy, including the "flat-for-flat" scheme, which is an alternative to cash compensation for eligible owner-occupiers, as well as the new "facilitator" and the "demand-led" schemes for urban renewal.
Mrs Lam also expressed her appreciation and gratitude to the outgoing Board member for his valuable contribution to the work of the URA.
The URA Board comprises 18 non-official non-executive directors (including the chairman), four official non-executive directors and three executive directors. All the non-official non-executive directors are appointed in their personal capacity.
