Secretary for Development to attend Urban India 2030 Symposium

The Secretary for Development, Mrs Carrie Lam, on the invitation of the Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation (GSAPP), Columbia University, New York, will speak at the symposium "Urban India 2030: History, Technology, and Community for Sustainable Urban Futures", to be held in Mumbai, India, from March 17 to 18.

Co-organised by Sustainable Urbanism International and Columbia University, New York, the symposium seeks an exchange of views amongst officials, academics and practitioners on the challenges involved in the pursuit of sustainable urban development. It also aims to critically examine aspects of public and private financing for sustainability and heritage in urban areas.

Mrs Lam will speak at the session on "Infrastructure and Innovation in Historic Urban Areas" on March 17, and make a presentation on Hong Kong's recent efforts in striking a balance between economic progress and heritage conservation, using Conserving Central, an initiative announced by the Chief Executive in his 2009-10 Policy Address, as a case study.  

Mrs Lam will take the opportunity to learn more about GSAPP's Studio-X, which is the venue of this symposium.  The Studio-X Global Network is an initiative of Columbia University's GSAPP, consisting of advanced research laboratories for exploring the future of cities. During her stay in Mumbai, Mrs Lam will also attend a roundtable discussion hosted by Asia Society India Centre as part of its Women of Asia series, sharing thoughts with a group of women professionals.

Mrs Lam will return to Hong Kong on March 19 (Monday) morning.
