CS opens City Gallery (with photos)

The City Gallery was officially opened today (August 20) by the Chief Secretary for Administration, Mrs Carrie Lam. It will be open to the public from August 22.

Other officiating guests at the opening ceremony included the Secretary for Development, Mr Paul Chan; the Acting Permanent Secretary for Development (Planning and Lands), Ms Gracie Foo; and the Director of Planning, Mr Jimmy Leung.

Located at 3 Edinburgh Place, Central, the City Gallery is the first permanent planning and infrastructure gallery in Hong Kong. Occupying five storeys with a floor area of more than 3,200 square metres, the gallery will offer a host of interactive exhibits to showcase the uniqueness of Hong Kong past and future, as well as share with the public the vision for city planning and infrastructure projects.

The ground floor presents a brief history of the gallery and exhibits a comparison of Hong Kong with other world cities in respect of its built up area, population and tallest buildings. The first floor showcases the principles of urban design and provides information on sustainable development. Fun yet informative exhibits on planning strategy, transport and communication networks, urban greenery and natural resources in Hong Kong are available on the second floor. The 17-minute Main Show on the third floor gives an audio and visual introduction on Hong Kong's remarkable past development as well as plans for the city's future.

The gallery also has a thematic exhibition area, multi-purpose hall, resource centre and meeting room for organising special exhibitions and various activities related to planning and infrastructure development.

For groups of 15 visitors or above, reservations can be made from between three months at the earliest to two weeks at the latest prior to the day of visit. Please call 3104 0129 for group reservation.

It is open from 10am to 6pm from Monday to Sunday and is closed on Tuesdays (except public holidays) and the first two days of the Chinese New Year. Admission is free.
