The following is issued on behalf of the Advisory Committee on Water Resources and Quality of Water Supplies:

Members of the public are welcome to attend the All About H2O lecture series organised by the Advisory Committee on Water Resources and Quality of Water Supplies (ACRQWS) being held from today (April 13) to July 13 at the Hong Kong Science Museum, where experts will introduce the science and technology in the management of water resources from different perspectives.

Supported by universities, green groups, professional institutions, the Water Supplies Department (WSD) and the Hong Kong Science Museum, the lecture series will be presented by university professors, a medical practitioner and professionals from the WSD. They will speak on four areas, namely "Science of water", "Water resources in China and Hong Kong", "The challenges of water resources in China" and "Water quality and health".

Officiating at the launching ceremony today, the Secretary for Development, Mr Paul Chan, said water is a precious natural resource and public participation is essential in securing a sustainable supply of water resources. He called on the public to help disseminate the important message of saving water to their families and friends.

The Chairman of the ACRQWS, Dr Chan Hon-fai, said this year is the United Nations International Year of Water Cooperation. By organising the public lectures, the ACRQWS hopes to enhance public awareness of preserving and protecting precious water resources through exploring issues relating to water resources from scientific and everyday-life perspectives.

To complement the lecture series, the ACRQWS and the WSD are staging a special exhibition at the Hong Kong Science Museum in three sessions from March to July (March 29 to April 14, May 10 to June 19 and July 5 to 17). Apart from the lecture series, the exhibition will feature "Global and local water resources distribution", "Desalination technology", "Water treatment technologies", "Water quality monitoring - chemical and biological techniques" and the concepts of "Virtual water" and "Reclaimed water" to showcase the science and technology applied in maintaining an efficient, reliable and high-quality drinking water supply in Hong Kong.

Admission to the All About H2O lecture series and special exhibition is free and pre-registration is not required. For details, please call 2732 3223 or visit the WSD's website at www.wsd.gov.hk/en/adhoc/all_about_water and the Hong Kong Science Museum's website at hk.science.museum.
