Construction contractors, supervising companies, site supervisors and workers with an outstanding safety performance were commended at the 20th Considerate Contractors Site Award Scheme Award Presentation Ceremony today (May 29). Jointly held by the Development Bureau and the Construction Industry Council, the ceremony marked the finale of Construction Safety Week 2014.

Addressing the ceremony, the Secretary for Development, Mr Paul Chan, said the Scheme aims to encourage contractors to strive for excellence in terms of ensuring work safety, caring for their workers and minimising any impact on the environment and community. He also said it was encouraging to note that the Scheme has received sustained support from the industry.

Also speaking at the ceremony, the Chairman of the Construction Industry Council, Mr Lee Shing-see, said that enhanced working conditions and care for workers' health can help improve work efficiency. To attract more youngsters to join the construction workforce, the Council launched the "Build Up Ambassadors" campaign last year to further improve the industry's image.

The Scheme was well received, with 287 works sites participating. After assessment, 57 sites received awards, of which 31 came from the public works stream and 26 from the non-public works stream. There are several award categories under the Scheme, including the Considerate Contractors Site Award (New Works), the Considerate Contractors Site Award (Repair, Maintenance, Alteration and Addition Works), the Outstanding Environmental Management and Performance Award, the Model Sub-contractor Award, the Model Frontline Supervisor Award, the Best Model Frontline Supervisor Award, the Model Worker Award and the Best Model Worker Award.

Other officiating guests at the ceremony included the Permanent Secretary for Development (Works), Mr Wai Chi-sing; the Permanent Secretary for Labour and Welfare, Miss Annie Tam; and the Assistant Director of Environmental Protection (Environmental Compliance), Mr David Wong.

The list of awardees of the 20th Considerate Contractors Site Award Scheme is available at the Development Bureau's website (www.devb.gov.hk/en/construction_sector_matters/contractors/considerate_contractors_site/).
