40th anniversary of Shenzhen River Regulation (with photos)
The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government today (December 16) jointly held a commemorative ceremony for the 40th anniversary of Shenzhen River Regulation with the Shenzhen Municipal People's Government in Hong Kong and Shenzhen respectively.
The Secretary for Development, Ms Bernadette Linn, accompanied by the Permanent Secretary for Development (Works), Mr Ricky Lau; the Director of Drainage Services, Ms Alice Pang; and the Deputy Secretary for Development (Works), Mr Roger Wong, officiated at the ceremony, which was held online simultaneously at the City Gallery in Central and in Shenzhen.
Speaking at the ceremony, Ms Linn said Hong Kong and Shenzhen are connected by the river. She expressed her gratitude to all the personnel from Hong Kong and Shenzhen who have participated in the Shenzhen River Regulation project for overcoming numerous challenges together over the years to complete the four-stage river regulation project, resolving the flooding problem and making Shenzhen and Hong Kong better places to live and work.
She added that in view of climate change and regional development, both cities should step up the review and planning for the needs for future flood preventive measures, ensuring the regulation works for the Shenzhen River should also progress with the times to meet the needs. Hong Kong has all along taken forward the development of the Northern Metropolis at full steam and a diversified and high-quality boundary control points economic belt will be built. This enables Hong Kong to better integrate into China's overall development. It is expected to bring a new paradigm to both sides of the Shenzhen River in the future.
The governments of Hong Kong and Shenzhen set up a joint working group on Shenzhen River Regulation in 1982 to resolve the flooding of Shenzhen River. The four-stage regulation project has already been completed in 2017.
